EG SENIORS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP MIDLAND QUALIFYING 'TEAM OF SIX' COMP
Staffordshire hosted at Sandwell Park a stones throw from The Hawthornes, home of West Bromwich Albion football club. The 6 man team were Charles Banks, Mark Betteridge, Chris Powell, Andy Cook, Rob Sallis and Ian Newlove.
Following a practice round the day before the two day event the focus of discussions were on the greens, high tariff with speed and slopes. This proved to be the courses defence as on Day1 the Notts team could only muster five birdies and an eagle over the 108 holes played.
Staffs, who had three players from the home Club led the way with 369, a average of just under 74 per player. Notts posted 383 averaging 76.5 and were in 5th place.
The weather on Day 2 consisted of a persistent drizzle which did not help the already wet underfoot conditions. Unfortunately it proved to be a tough day for Notts who could not make inroads into Staffs lead. With a second round total of 381 (average just over 76) Staffs held on by a shot over Lincs who posted the best score of the day 371 (74.2 average).
Notts ended in 9th spot in the 10 county event, which was not what we hoped for. Midlands and National Seniors golf is of a high standard for many it is a full time job! Team spirit remained good throughout the event, the players gave their all, and will be back stronger.
Thanks to Richard Shelbourne and Ian Tilson who came along to provide support.
